Indianapolis was the big winner at a recent sports event industry convention in Anaheim, California. The city took home two out of the six awards presented by SportsTravel for the best events, venues, and host cities in the sports-event industry for 2024. Indianapolis was named Best Host City, with over $500 million in economic impact from events such as the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend and the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Swimming. The latter also won Best Amateur Event, with a record-breaking attendance at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indiana Sports Corp, a nonprofit dedicated to hosting sporting events in Indianapolis, expressed their gratitude for everyone involved in making these events a success.
Other winners at the convention included the 2023 Volleyball Day in Lincoln, Nebraska for Best Collegiate Event, the 2024 NFL draft in Detroit for Best Professional Event, and the 2023 All-Ripken Games in multiple cities for Best New Event. The Best New or Renovated Venue award went to the new home of the KC Current in the National Women’s Soccer League, which is the first stadium in the world specifically constructed for professional women’s sports and features a surrounding retail development. Overall, it was a successful event celebrating the best in the sports industry for 2024.
