Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to make her first visit to the southern border since announcing her candidacy for the 2024 race. She will be visiting a border town in Arizona to highlight former President Donald Trump’s role in sinking a bipartisan border deal this year. Harris, who has been trailing Trump on immigration and border security issues in polls, aims to showcase her previous work on these issues and portray Trump as “dangerous.” She plans to discuss her bipartisan border security plan during her visit.
Harris often criticizes Trump for killing a bipartisan border security bill that would have addressed many issues he frequently criticizes. If elected, she has promised to revive and sign the bill into law. Trump, on the other hand, has made the border and immigration central to his campaign, frequently visiting the southern border and using degrading language to describe migrants.
Despite polling indicating that voters see Trump as better able to handle border security and immigration, Harris is seen as better at treating immigrants humanely and protecting their rights. Recent data shows a decline in migrants seeking shelter at the southern border and a decrease in apprehensions by Border Patrol agents. Harris’ visit to Douglas, Arizona, will be her second trip to the southern border during her term as vice president.
