Italian President Sergio Mattarella praised the strong relationship between Rome and Berlin during a three-day state visit to Germany. He stressed the importance of a united EU to tackle international challenges and reiterated the significance of the friendship between the two countries. Speaking alongside Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Mattarella warned against the dangers of political populism and stated that peace in Ukraine should not equate to submission.
During his visit, Mattarella met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss European issues and also visited the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat in Bonn. The presidents planned to attend a service in Italy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre, in which over 770 Italian civilians were killed by Waffen SS troops. Mattarella expressed his gratitude for the joint participation in the event, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring the victims of such atrocities.
The visit highlighted the ongoing cooperation between Germany and Italy, particularly in the fight against climate change. Mattarella’s message of unity and remembrance resonated as both countries paid tribute to those who suffered during World War II. The presidents’ commitment to strengthening ties and upholding international law served as a powerful reminder of the need for unity and cooperation in addressing global challenges.
