Connecticut Sun player Alyssa Thomas recently spoke out about experiencing racist comments from Indiana Fever fans after a game. This comes after the Sun beat the Fever in the WNBA playoffs, eliminating the Indiana team. Thomas described the comments as unacceptable and something she has never experienced in her 11 years of playing basketball.
Following Thomas’ comments, her coach and the WNBA issued statements condemning the racist remarks and stating that such behavior will not be tolerated. Fever Coach Christie Sides acknowledged that players were receiving hurtful comments, emphasizing that this is a professional basketball game and such behavior is unacceptable.
Fever fans also expressed their disapproval of the racist remarks, with one fan saying it reflects poorly on the entire fan base. Fans outside Gainbridge Fieldhouse called for an end to the racism and expressed support for the team, particularly standout performer Caitlyn Clark.
Despite the racist comments, some fans like Samuel Nettles and Corey Arnett noted that racism is unfortunately not new and that they have learned to brush it off and keep supporting their team. Nettles called for unity and to focus on cheering the Fever to victory, rather than engaging in such negative behavior.
The WNBA is taking a stand against racism and will involve law enforcement if necessary to address such behavior going forward. This incident highlights the importance of condemning racism in sports and society as a whole.
