INDOT Announces Major Overhaul to I-465 Interchange at U.S. 31/Meridian Street in Carmel
CARMEL, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has unveiled its plans for a major overhaul to the I-465 interchange at U.S. 31/Meridian Street in Carmel. The project, known as Level Up 31, aims to address safety issues and congestion at the interchange.
Kyleigh Cramer, spokesperson for INDOT, highlighted the need for the project, citing an increase in crashes, congestion, and unsafe lane movements in the area. The population in Carmel and surrounding areas has been on the rise, with Hamilton County experiencing significant growth.
Since INDOT completed the conversion of U.S. 31 into a freeway in 2015, traffic at the interchange has steadily increased. By 2025, INDOT expects almost 105,000 vehicles per day to travel through the interchange, growing to 160,000 by 2045.
The Level Up 31 project will add lanes on I-465 eastbound to U.S. 31 northbound, I-465 westbound to U.S. 31 northbound, and an access lane to 106th Street. The project is scheduled to begin construction in the fall or summer of 2025, with a target completion date of late 2027.
Public meetings have been held to gather input from residents, with another meeting planned for the winter. INDOT aims to improve safety and traffic flow at the interchange to accommodate the growing population and economic development in Hamilton County.
The proposed changes have been well-received by residents, with many expressing their support for the project. As the population in the region continues to grow, residents are hopeful that the Level Up 31 project will alleviate congestion and improve safety on the roadways.
