Ugandan activists criticize strict abortion laws as unnecessary deaths occur in the country’s title

Moses Odongo, founder of Family Medical Point in Uganda, recently experienced the tragic death of his 14-year-old cousin, Christine, due to complications from an unsafe abortion. This heartbreaking incident has sparked anger in Odongo towards Uganda’s restrictive abortion laws and conservative culture. Abortion is highly restricted in Uganda, with unclear laws and conflicting guidelines from the Ministry of Health. Due to fear of imprisonment, women seeking abortions often resort to dangerous methods, resulting in numerous deaths and complications.

Activists in Uganda, such as Odongo and the Uganda Network of Sex Worker-led Organizations, are working together to raise awareness about safe abortion practices and provide support for vulnerable communities. International Safe Abortion Day, celebrated on September 28, serves as a platform for these advocates to address the challenges faced by women and girls in accessing safe abortion services.

The fight for reproductive rights in Uganda continues to be an emotional battle, with activists like Odongo and sex workers like Irene Nakate sharing their stories of trauma and resilience. Despite opposition from religious and political leaders, these advocates are determined to push for more accessible and comprehensive reproductive health services in the country. Through grassroots initiatives, information sessions, and community outreach, these individuals are working tirelessly to ensure that women like Christine do not suffer needlessly from unsafe abortions.
