IU requires police officers to undergo mental health first-aid training – Latest Updates on Indianapolis News, Indiana Weather, and Traffic Conditions

Police officers at all nine Indiana University campuses are being trained to recognize potential mental health crises when responding to calls. Lt. Brian Ray, who helps conduct the training, noted that officers are not expected to diagnose individuals but should be able to spot signs of anxiety attacks, which can mimic symptoms of a heart attack. The training is mandatory for all new officers and those transferring from other departments.

By being able to identify mental health issues, officers can handle calls differently and de-escalate situations without using force, particularly important on college campuses where students may be experiencing mental health challenges for the first time. Ray emphasized the significance of addressing mental health concerns early, especially among the age group of 18 to 25 who are away from their families for the first time.

Ray hopes that other police departments will adopt similar training programs, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness not only for civilians but also for fellow officers. By providing resources and support, officers can connect individuals with the help they need and ensure a safer response to calls involving mental health crises. The initiative at Indiana University highlights a proactive approach to mental health support in law enforcement, paving the way for improved interactions and outcomes in emergency situations.
