Former IndyCar driver, Sam Schmidt, who was left paralyzed from the neck down after a racing accident almost 25 years ago, has dedicated his life to helping others with spinal cord injuries find hope and normalcy. After a groundbreaking surgery following his accident, Schmidt was able to get off the ventilator in just three weeks, thanks to the work of his doctor and inspiration from Christopher Reeve, who was also paralyzed.
Schmidt has since opened the Driven NeuroRecovery Center in Las Vegas, aimed at helping those with similar injuries. Recently, he partnered with NeuroHope to open a 114,000-square-foot Conquer Paralysis Now center in Indianapolis, catering not only to spinal cord injuries but also to a range of neurological disorders.
The facility includes aquatic pools, rehab equipment, and wheelchair sports facilities, with plans for mental health services, K9 companions, and financial aid programs. They also have a demonstration apartment and kitchen to help patients adapt to their new lifestyle by providing practical training.
Schmidt’s goal is to provide resources and support for individuals with neuro-disabilities who often struggle with insurance limitations and lack of rehabilitation access. The center has already attracted patients from various backgrounds, including current IndyCar drivers and Roger Penske.
Through his work, Schmidt hopes to leave a lasting legacy by helping others adapt to their new lives and find their passion despite their challenges. He encourages individuals to make the choice to seek help and embrace a meaningful life post-injury.
