Former Indiana Correction Officer Sentenced to 50 Years for Inmate Sexual Assaults
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Gbenga Afolabi, a former officer with the Indiana Department of Correction, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting inmates at the Indiana Women’s Prison. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced the sentence on Monday, marking a significant outcome in a troubling case of abuse of power.
On October 31, a Marion County jury found Afolabi guilty of rape, attempted rape, and several other charges after a three-day trial. The investigation began in July 2021 when authorities were alerted to Afolabi’s inappropriate conduct towards female inmates under his supervision.
Details of the misconduct revealed that Afolabi had exploited his position, using threats and intimidation to coerce four victims into submitting to his demands. This case has raised serious concerns about safety and accountability within correctional facilities, as it underscores the potential for abuse when those in authority violate their responsibilities.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the importance of holding officials accountable for such crimes, reinforcing their commitment to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals within the justice system.
This case highlights the ongoing issues surrounding sexual abuse in correctional institutions and the imperative for both reform and vigilance to protect inmates from those who may exploit their authority. Afolabi’s sentencing serves as a strong message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated and that victims are encouraged to come forward.
The prosecution hopes that this outcome will empower more individuals to speak out against abuse within the prison system, ensuring justice is served and preventive measures are enacted to protect all inmates.
