Disciplinary Charges Filed Against Putnam Superior Court Judge
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications has filed disciplinary charges against Judge Charles “Denny” Bridges of Putnam Superior Court, alleging bias in a case involving a former romantic partner. The charges come after claims that Judge Bridges made disparaging remarks about women and showed favoritism towards one party in the case.
The allegations detail how Judge Bridges reportedly made prejudicial comments about women in similar situations, suggesting that they often exploit their circumstances. Comments included his assertion, “I see women that kind of make a habit out of this,” and dismissive remarks regarding claims of “sweat equity” made by the woman involved in the dispute over their jointly owned home. The judge also issued rulings without allowing the woman, who claimed she deserved restitution from the sale of the home, an opportunity to respond.
These statements have led to concerns that the judge could not remain impartial. The disciplinary charges consist of two counts of misconduct against him, including violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct, which mandates judges act without bias and refrain from gender-based harassment.
Judge Bridges has 20 days to respond to the charges, after which the Indiana Supreme Court will appoint a panel to conduct a public hearing. Possible outcomes range from dismissal of the charges to sanctions, including a reprimand or suspension. Since taking office in January 2009, Bridges has been based in the Putnam County Courthouse in Greencastle. He is represented by attorney James Voyles.
The case marks a significant moment in judicial accountability as the Indiana Commission navigates the complexities surrounding conduct in the courtroom.
