Trump Names Sean Duffy as Transportation Secretary
WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Sean Duffy to be the new transportation secretary, entrusting him with the oversight of a vast transportation network that encompasses pipelines, railroads, vehicles, airlines, and mass transit systems, alongside the crucial task of highway funding.
Duffy, 53, is a former congressman from Wisconsin, where he served in the House of Representatives for nine years after his election during the tea party surge in 2010. He held his post from 2011 until 2019, when he resigned to focus on his large family, which includes nine children. In Congress, Duffy was part of the House Financial Services Committee and chaired its subcommittee on housing and insurance.
Transitioning from politics to media, Duffy joined Fox News as a contributor in 2020, becoming a prominent defender of Trump on cable news. He co-hosted “The Bottom Line” on Fox Business until stepping down on Monday. His nomination follows Trump’s selection of another Fox-affiliated media personality, Pete Hegseth, as defense secretary.
Duffy also shares a reality television history with Trump; he first gained fame in 1997 as a cast member on MTV’s “The Real World: Boston.” He met his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, on another MTV show, illustrating their crossover appeal in both the television and political arenas.
He notably declined a run for Wisconsin governor in 2022, despite Trump’s encouragement, citing family obligations and the health needs of his youngest child. Duffy previously made headlines as an underdog candidate, using unique campaign ads featuring a lumberjack theme, drawing from his background as a former lumberjack athlete.
