Cold Weather and Snow Expected in Indianapolis This Thursday
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis residents should prepare for a chilly and wintry Thursday, with strong winds and snow making an appearance in the forecast.
As temperatures drop into the upper 20s and low 30s overnight, cloud cover will spread across the region, bringing the potential for scattered rain showers, primarily north of I-70. As the night progresses, a mix of rain and snow is anticipated.
Thursday will feature two significant waves of precipitation. The first wave is expected in the morning, bringing light snow that may dust grassy and elevated surfaces. This wave will dissipate by mid-morning but will lay the groundwork for the second, more intense wave of snowfall that is expected to move in by early afternoon.
The second wave is forecasted to produce more consistent and heavier snow, moving through the area during the afternoon and into the evening. Areas near and north of Interstate 74 could see snow accumulations ranging from one to two inches, with the possibility for higher amounts on some surfaces. However, travelers should prepare for slushy road conditions, particularly during the second wave.
Key factors regarding accumulation remain under observation, including warm ground temperatures influenced by recent weather, and the likelihood of rain mixing in with the snowfall during the second round.
As gusty winds of 30-40 MPH are also predicted, wind chill values are expected to plummet, making it feel like the 20s. The high for Thursday will only reach the low to mid-30s.
Looking ahead, lingering showers may persist into Friday, but temperatures will warm slightly into the low to mid-40s. This weekend promises a rebound into the 50s, with additional rain chances forecasted early next week. Residents are advised to dress warmly and stay informed on changing weather conditions.
