Former high school teacher deemed a danger to the community after being accused of grooming students for “vicarious sex acts”. Charles Jansen, 53, a former teacher at Taylor High School in Howard County, was arrested and charged with vicarious sexual gratification with a child under 14. Court documents show that one of Jansen’s former students came forward in April 2023, revealing years of abuse endured at the hands of Jansen, which involved performing degrading sexual acts to satisfy Jansen’s paraphilic desires.
The student revealed that the abuse started while they were still in high school and continued even after graduation, raising concerns about the safety of their own child. Two other victims also came forward with similar allegations against Jansen in 2011 and 2019. Jansen was confronted about the abuse at his workplace, St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he admitted to some of the accusations but claimed the victims were not students.
Jansen was placed on administrative leave in 2011 after questionable conduct with a minor was reported to Indiana State Police. Despite his resignation, the school district reported him to the Indiana Department of Education and took proactive steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. Jansen is currently being held in Howard County jail on a $30,000 bond and his trial is set for September.
Taylor Community School Corporation has expressed support for the victims and implemented additional safeguards for student protection. Parents are encouraged to be vigilant about grooming behavior and to educate their children about the dangers of sexual abuse. Resources for victims of domestic violence and mental health support are available for those in need.
