Republican candidate for Indiana’s House of Representatives, Jim Schenke, was arrested on the eve of his election for allegedly violating a protection order. The arrest came after a complaint that he contacted the victim, who has a protection order against him. Schenke refuted the allegations on Facebook, claiming he has a protective order against the person accusing him.
Schenke faces incumbent Chris Campbell, a Democrat, for Indiana’s 26th House District seat. Last month, Schenke was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance after allegedly driving his campaign motor home into a light post. The charge was later dropped. The Tippecanoe County Election Board has also accused him of inadequately putting political disclaimers in campaign advertisements.
In addition to the recent arrest, Schenke has two protection orders against him from a local attorney and their staff, as well as a man in his neighborhood. The Exponent reports that Schenke allegedly contacted someone with a protection order against him via a Facebook post, leading to his arrest for invasion of privacy. Schenke’s arrest has added further controversy to his already tumultuous campaign.
Despite his legal troubles, Schenke remains determined to address issues such as sexual attacks against women, as highlighted by his recent Facebook video discussing emergency phone boxes on Purdue University campuses. The outcome of the election between Schenke and Campbell is now uncertain, with Schenke facing mounting legal challenges and negative publicity.
