Indianapolis Woman Convicted in 2023 Murder Case
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In a significant development in local crime, Monique Cooley, an Indianapolis resident, was found guilty of the murder of Michael Hess during a jury trial that concluded Tuesday. The verdict comes following a tragic incident that unfolded on June 7, 2023, outside a home near 24th and North Kenyon streets.
According to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Cooley was involved in a violent confrontation with Hess while he was outdoors with neighbors, including children. Eyewitnesses reported that Cooley arrived at the scene, engaged in an argument with Hess, and during this altercation, she demanded that someone take a child away from him before opening fire. Hess was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, June 8.
The investigation quickly gained momentum due to community cooperation. Local residents identified Cooley as the shooter, and their accounts, alongside surveillance footage and cell phone records, confirmed her presence at the scene during the shooting, ultimately leading to her conviction.
Prosecutor Ryan Mears commended the community’s role in the case, stating, “This case was solved due to our community stepping up and doing the right on behalf of Michael Hess. Their cooperation at the scene and willingness to attend the trial were crucial in securing this conviction.”
Cooley’s sentencing is set for December 12, where she may face a lengthy prison term for her actions. The case stands as a reminder of the impacts of gun violence in communities and the collective responsibility individuals hold in seeking justice.
