Marquette Shocks Purdue, Ends Boilermakers’ Historic Streak

Milwaukee, WI — In a stunning upset, No. 15 Marquette defeated No. 6 Purdue 76-58 on Tuesday night, effectively ending the Boilermakers’ impressive 39-game regular-season nonconference winning streak, which dated back to December 2020. This loss marks a pivotal moment for Purdue (4-1), who had been riding high with the fourth-longest such streak in NCAA history.

Marquette’s Kam Jones showcased a phenomenal all-around performance, achieving a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists—the first such feat since Dwyane Wade’s legendary 2003 performance against Kentucky. Stevie Mitchell also made headlines, contributing a career-high 21 points, supported by Chase Ross with 12 and Ben Gold with 11.

Purdue struggled offensively, especially in contrast to their previous game against then-No. 2 Alabama, where they committed just three turnovers. On Tuesday, they were not as diligent, tallying 15 turnovers against a resilient Marquette defense. Trey Kaufman-Renn led the way for the Boilermakers with 16 points, while Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

A crucial moment came with eight minutes remaining when David Joplin sparked an 8-0 run for Marquette that pushed the lead to 14 points, effectively sealing the game. Marquette (5-0) now turns its attention to a matchup against Georgia at Paradise Island, Bahamas, while Purdue will look to rebound as they host Marshall on Saturday.

As the season progresses, Marquette has proven to be a formidable contender, marking a significant milestone with this victory over one of the nation’s elite teams.
