Cold Snap and Snow Expected in Central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana is experiencing a significant drop in temperatures as the region braces for its coldest weather since March, alongside the potential for snow beginning Thursday.
Residents awoke to mid-40s temperatures, with a weather system bringing light rain into the area from Illinois. A secondary cold front is expected to impact the region shortly. Wednesday will see increasing clouds and quick, light showers producing between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain before settling into a dry but breezy afternoon, with high temperatures around 50°F and wind gusts reaching 30-35 mph.
As night falls, temperatures will chill near freezing, leading to the likelihood of light rain transitioning into snow overnight. Snow accumulations are expected to be minimal, primarily a dusting to half an inch, affecting mainly grassy areas and elevated surfaces. However, motorists should exercise caution due to possible slick spots on bridges and overpasses during Thursday morning commutes.
Thursday’s forecast includes scattered snow showers that will gradually move southeast. While initial snow impacts on the morning commute are predicted to be minor, a second round of stronger precipitation is forecast to arrive in the afternoon, potentially delivering one to two inches of snow, particularly concerning for the evening drive.
Friday will bring cloudy conditions with light rain possible in the eastern parts of the state, while temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-40s. As the weekend approaches, warmer temperatures in the upper 40s on Saturday and low to mid-50s on Sunday will signal a welcome change, as a warming trend persists into the holiday week with highs nearing 60°F by Monday.
