Carmel Christkindlmarkt Returns for Eighth Year: A Celebration of German Holiday Traditions
CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — The Carmel Christkindlmarkt, a cherished holiday tradition in central Indiana, kicks off its eighth season this Saturday with over 50 food and craft vendors. The market has become a hub for the community, showcasing a variety of holiday offerings, including handmade wooden decorations by Lauri Thomasson, who sources her products from Germany, Austria, and Ukraine.
Returning delights include classic German treats such as pretzels, raclette cheese sandwiches, sausages, hot cocoa, and Glühwein (German mulled wine). This year’s market introduces new menu items like the flaming cocktail, Feuerzangenbowle, and potato dumplings, Klöße. Local favorite Rose and Lois will serve spiked coffee options, including a rum peppermint mocha and a vodka pistachio oat latte.
Das German Haus will also return, offering Bavarian pretzels through a collaboration with the German American Club of Indianapolis and the Indiana German Heritage Society. Their pretzels promise a chewy interior enveloped in a firm, crusty exterior, celebrating the rich German heritage of Central Indiana.
Visitors can enjoy artisan demonstrations in the market’s Werkstatt, where glass blowing, woodworking, and toy-making take place. Family-friendly activities including a free kids’ corner and cultural exhibits will also be offered.
Last year, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt attracted around 475,000 visitors and generated $9.1 million in sales. It has garnered significant national acclaim, recently ranked No. 6 in USA Today’s Best Holiday Market poll.
The market officially opens with a ceremony at 11 a.m. this Saturday and will run daily until Christmas Eve, inviting all to experience the magic of the season.
