Agricultural Education Cultivates Future Leaders in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In a bid to inspire and prepare the next generation, Indiana FFA, in collaboration with National FFA, has launched the "Grow With Us" initiative, aiming to equip students with essential skills and connections that extend beyond the classroom.
Students like Dupree Henry, treasurer of the FFA chapter at Hamilton Southeastern High School, are already reaping the benefits. “I feel like I have a very strong bond with all of them, and our friendship will last beyond high school,” Henry said, highlighting the supportive community FFA fosters. This initiative is instrumental in bolstering teamwork and leadership among students, as they prepare for various competitions.
Agricultural education opens doors to over 350 career paths, spanning fields such as STEM, business, education, and communications. Henry expressed his aspirations of pursuing a college degree in marketing or communications, reflecting the diverse opportunities available within the agricultural sector.
Ambra Tannery, associate director of educational programs for National FFA, emphasized the initiative’s role in shaping students ready for the workforce, higher education, military service, or entrepreneurship. "Students are engaging in various fields—from drone technology to food science and pharmaceuticals," she stated.
The Three Component Model of agricultural education, which integrates classroom learning, work-based experiences, and leadership development, currently supports 240 agriculture programs serving around 15,000 students across Indiana. Tannery noted, “The goal is to grow these chapters and enhance opportunities for students and teachers throughout the state.”
Henry finds purpose in his involvement with FFA and values the leadership skills he has gained. “I have especially enjoyed our agriculture and communications contest… and working with my peers to do our best in these competitions,” he shared. Through initiatives like "Grow With Us," Indiana FFA is not just planting seeds for crops but also cultivating tomorrow’s leaders.
