Indiana Senate Democrats reelected Greg Taylor as their caucus leader despite allegations of sexual harassment against him that were detailed in a recent Indianapolis Star article. The story revealed that three women accused Taylor of verbal and physical sexual harassment dating back to over a decade ago. Some of these allegations were reported to past legislative leaders, but no action was taken. In response, Taylor apologized for his behavior and admitted to potentially blurring the lines.
The Senate Democratic caucus did not issue a statement after reelecting Taylor, only confirming that he had retained his leadership position. However, they did release a statement calling for an improved misconduct reporting structure within the legislature. House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta condemned sexual harassment regardless of the perpetrator, emphasizing the importance of training and mechanisms in place to handle such allegations.
House Speaker Todd Huston also highlighted the House’s reporting system and commitment to creating a safe working environment for all employees, especially women. Despite the allegations against Taylor, Huston expressed optimism that the Statehouse is a safe space for everyone. This controversial re-election of Taylor as Senate Minority Leader may raise concerns about the handling of sexual harassment allegations within the Indiana legislature.
