WISH-TV Honors Outstanding Teacher with Golden Apple Award
Indianapolis, IN – WISH-TV proudly announces Mr. Brent Cummings as the November winner of the Golden Apple Award, designed to recognize exceptional educators in Central Indiana. The award includes a $2,000 cash prize from Western Governor’s University (WGU), a trophy, a shopping spree at Teachers’ Treasures, and a surprise visit from the News 8 team.
Mr. Cummings, a Project Lead The Way teacher at Jeremiah Gray Elementary School in Perry Township, is affectionately known for his Batman-themed classroom where he engages students in exciting learning experiences. "He’s really nice and funny," stated students Kalil Muwallif and Addison Staton, emphasizing his approachable nature and deep connections with the class.
In his 18th year of teaching, Cummings integrates STEM-based problem-solving into his lessons, helping students from the first to fifth grades think critically. He also leads the robotics program and Spell Bowl team, with a record number of students eager to participate.
Principal Doug Smith praised Cummings for his dedication, stating, "He truly cares about each and every person," while fellow teacher Lora Spangle noted the love and respect he commands from students. This level of admiration and connection was palpable on the day of the award presentation, where Cummings received heartfelt video tributes from his students and staff, moving him to tears.
Upon receiving the prize, Cummings shared, "It’s the kids that make you want to come to work." His commitment reveals that heroes don’t always wear capes; some inspire through teaching and caring for their students.
