Volcanic activity continues as Icelandic volcano erupts for the seventh time in a year

A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted for the seventh time in a year, with lava and smoke spewing from a two-mile-long fissure. The eruption did not disrupt air traffic or infrastructure. Social media livestreams showed glowing hot lava shooting into the sky. Authorities had previously warned of volcanic activity in the area, but there was no noticeable increase in seismic activity. The eruption was smaller than previous ones, with no significant ash dispersal or air traffic disruption. The nearby Blue Lagoon resort was evacuated, but the airport remained unaffected. The town of Grindavik, previously evacuated, was not in danger, but some houses were evacuated as a precaution. Iceland sits above a volcanic hot spot and experiences eruptions every four to five years. The Reykjanes peninsula has been experiencing rising volcanic activity since 2021, with experts warning of continued eruptions for decades or even centuries. This eruption was the sixth in 2024 and follows the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption, which disrupted air travel for months.
