First Snow of the Season Hits Central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana is experiencing its first snowfall of the season, with light snow beginning early Thursday and a winter weather advisory in effect until 10 p.m. Today’s weather is expected to bring a mix of snow and rain, particularly in a heavier second round from 2 to 8 p.m.
Crews from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works and the Indiana Department of Transportation are actively treating roads to ensure safe travel for commuters. Meteorologist Ryan Morse anticipates that the bulk of the snow accumulation, expected to be between 1 to 2 inches, will occur during the late afternoon hours. Notably, the heaviest accumulations are likely to be seen north of Interstate 74, primarily on grass and elevated surfaces.
Reports indicate that while the initial dusting may cause slush on untreated roads, conditions will generally improve as treatment efforts take effect. Local news crews are actively covering the winter weather, emphasizing the picturesque scenery resulting from the first snowfall, while also advising viewers to exercise caution on the roadways.
A morning update from meteorologist Marcus Bailey noted that the first round may leave a light dusting of up to an inch on grassy areas without significantly impacting road conditions. However, motorists should anticipate slick and slushy patches later in the day as heavier snow arrives.
As this winter weather event unfolds, residents are reminded to prepare for potential travel disruptions and to adopt safe driving practices during these wintry conditions.
