Press Release: ‘13 FIRES’ Explores Indianapolis’ Historical Struggles in Powerful Theatrical Performance
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This November, The District Theater is set to stage ‘13 FIRES,’ a poignant play that reveals the historical struggles of the Indiana Avenue community in 1956. Crafted around true events, the production addresses the severe impact of racial discrimination and urban development policies that ultimately caused the tragic deaths of two children, linking these issues to today’s housing crisis.
Actress Heather Strain and actor Kendall Crenshaw shared insights about the play during a recent appearance on Daybreak, emphasizing its relevance and emotional weight. “’13 FIRES’ examines the ramifications of choices made from a government level aiming for community improvement, but which ultimately displaced a thriving Black neighborhood,” Strain explained. The narrative highlights the once-vibrant Indiana Avenue, showcasing its businesses and families obliterated by decisions that prioritized development over community welfare.
Set against the backdrop of the 1950s housing crisis, the play evokes the memory of a tragic incident where an electrical fire claimed the lives of two toddlers in a dilapidated structure. Strain pointed out that such tragedies exemplified the neglect faced by Black residents due to inadequate city oversight and lack of housing regulations, as landlords profited from unsafe conditions. The production delves into how systemic racism and urban renewal contributed to the fragmentation of this once-thriving community.
Crenshaw reflected on the hope that modern audiences will grasp the significance of the Black experience and societal challenges expressed through the characters. “It’s about amplifying the black voice, honoring truth, and striving for freedom,” he remarked.
‘13 FIRES’ will run from November 27 to December 1 at The District Theatre and is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older. Tickets are priced at $15, available through the theater’s website.
