Intermountain Health and the Billings YMCA have collaborated to offer a year-long Diabetes Prevention Program in Yellowstone County to combat Montana’s high diabetes rates. With over 38 million Americans and 77,000 Montanans diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, the program aims to reduce these numbers by promoting lifestyle changes and healthier habits. One participant, Jason Newell, shared his experience of being in the program for a second time after being diagnosed as pre-diabetic in the past. Through the program, he has learned to make small, sustainable changes to his diet and exercise routine, with the help of healthcare professionals like dietitian Rene Lindeen. The program, which costs $175, focuses on educating participants about ways to reduce weight and risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease, through structured lectures on diet and nutrition, and exercise classes with fitness trainers. To qualify for the program, participants must meet certain criteria, including having a BMI of 25 or above, risk factors for diabetes, and a referral from their provider. Overall, the program aims to make healthy living enjoyable and sustainable, encouraging participants like Jason Newell to find activities that they find fun and functional to improve their health.
