Larry L. Savage Jr., a former Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, was taken into custody by Indiana State Police on suspicion of stealing several ballots during a test of voting machines earlier this month. He is facing charges of removal or destruction of ballots – a felony – and misdemeanor theft. Savage shared a video on Facebook maintaining his innocence, stating, “I guess this is what they do to political opponents.”
The charges stem from an October 3 public testing event in Madison County where test ballots were used to check voting machines. Two of the ballots went missing, and surveillance footage showed Savage allegedly stealing the missing ballots and placing them in his pocket.
Savage claimed he spoke to an older woman who told him the ballots were not real, but police found them in his car the same day. He dismissed the allegations as “political bullshit” and said they were an attempt to “fuck with” him because he had filed a police report against someone.
Savage, a self-proclaimed “MAGA candidate,” ran in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District Republican primary in May but only received 1.9% of the votes. The Indiana GOP spokesperson stated that they condemn any form of criminal election interference and appreciate law enforcement’s efforts in pursuing justice.
The case is still ongoing, and Savage is yet to have legal representation. The incident has raised concerns about election integrity and criminal interference in the electoral process.
