Gov.-elect Mike Braun has announced plans to reorganize Indiana’s state government departments into eight “verticals” in an effort to drive efficiency and accountability. The new cabinet model will consist of leaders from various agencies, with the most critical role being the secretary of management and budget.
Braun’s goal is to streamline how Indiana operates by aligning agencies, promoting better coordination and communication, and creating efficiency across state government. The cabinet will focus on delivering results for Hoosiers while identifying opportunities for cost savings and consolidation.
The other verticals will include commerce, health and family services, public safety, energy and natural resources, education, transportation and infrastructure, and business affairs. Lt. Gov.-elect Micah Beckwith, along with other key officials, will also sit in Braun’s cabinet.
The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority and the Indiana Gaming Commission will fall under specific secretaries’ oversight, while the overall structure of the cabinet will be refined over time based on stakeholder input and assessments.
During his campaign, Braun emphasized the importance of reducing state spending by 5% and returning those savings to Hoosiers in the form of a tax cut. By applying his entrepreneurial approach to state government, Braun aims to identify and eliminate excess spending, driving accountability and efficiency in the process.
