Police in Las Vegas arrested 57 striking casino workers at a protest outside Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The workers had walked off their jobs over stalled talks to win a new union pay contract. Images and videos posted by the Culinary Union showed members blocking a road in front of the hotel and some being handcuffed by police. The union’s leadership, including President Diana Valles, were also arrested. Las Vegas police stated that the road next to the casino, which had been closed due to protests, had reopened after the arrests. The city is currently hosting the Formula One Grand Prix. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is owned by JC Hospitality, Juniper Capital Partners, Virgin Group, and others. Virgin Hotels did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The arrest of the striking workers highlights the ongoing tensions between labor and management in the hospitality industry, particularly in Las Vegas. The Culinary Union continues to fight for fair wages and working conditions for its members, with protests and strikes being a common tactic used to pressure employers to meet their demands.
