Richard Garrett Sentenced to 194 Years in Prison for Series of Violent Crimes
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Richard Garrett, the final individual convicted in a string of violent offenses from October 2020, has been sentenced to an extensive 194 years in prison, according to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. His sentencing follows a six-day trial in Marion Superior Court 31, where a jury found him guilty of over a dozen crimes, including reckless homicide, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed robbery.
This was Garrett’s second trial; earlier in the year, a mistrial was declared after he allegedly struck his attorney in court. Alongside Garrett, co-defendants Delance Hatcher and Rashaana Farrow were implicated in 13 incidents that occurred within Marion County, including several nonfatal shootings, armed robberies, a hit-and-run resulting in the death of Anthony Mack, and the murder of 19-year-old Devon Gillespie.
Garrett was arrested in November 2020 amid investigations linking him to the unrelated death of a Fishers Police Department K-9, Harlej, during which he was found with a .45 mm handgun. He faced multiple charges stemming from the violent incidents, supported by forensic evidence such as matched shell casings and phone records connecting him and Hatcher to the crime scenes.
Co-defendant Hatcher was sentenced to 65 years for his involvement, while Farrow accepted a plea deal for Conspiracy to Commit Murder and is currently serving a 30-year term. The prosecutor’s office emphasized the severity of the crimes committed and the thorough investigative work that led to these convictions.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the judiciary to address and penalize violent crime in the Indianapolis area.
