Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill had traffic infractions dismissed on Monday, including careless driving and failing to wear a seatbelt, due to officers not showing up in court. Hill celebrated this on social media, questioning where the “internet cops” were. The dismissal caught Miami-Dade police by surprise, with a spokesperson calling it an oversight. The department stated that the citations held merit, but the officer not attending the hearing was an administrative error.
The incident occurred when Hill was pulled over by Miami-Dade police on his way to a Dolphins game and was handcuffed and placed on the pavement. Dolphins teammates Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell stopped to help, with Campbell also being handcuffed despite standing off to the side. Hill expressed concern that if he were not a well-known athlete, the situation could have escalated to violence or arrest.
Despite the incident, all the Dolphins players involved made it to their game, which they won. Hill had a successful game, catching seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Hill told NBC News that he felt it was excessive for officers to go to such lengths for a simple speeding ticket, highlighting concerns about police behavior. The case dismissal brings an end to the legal issues for Hill, who can now focus on his football career.
