Former FBI informant facing new tax charges after being accused of lying in Biden impeachment investigation

Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who provided false claims about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, has been indicted on 10 tax-related charges. The indictment alleges that Smirnov received over two million dollars in income between 2020-2022, which he used to purchase luxury items including a Las Vegas condominium and a Bentley. Smirnov, a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010, was prosecuted by special counsel David Weiss in connection to the Hunter Biden case. Prior to his indictment, Smirnov’s claims were central to Republicans’ impeachment inquiry against President Biden, who has denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors revealed that Smirnov obtained information from individuals linked to Russian intelligence and was spreading false information that could influence U.S. elections. Additionally, a separate indictment mentioned that Russia had attempted to assist Trump’s campaign by paying right-wing influencers. A trial on Smirnov’s false statements case has been scheduled to begin on Jan. 8, 2025, as per a ruling by U.S. District Judge Otis Wright.
