Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, allowing for a truce to take effect. The plan was approved by a 10-1 margin and comes after Israel inflicted heavy damage on Hezbollah. Netanyahu stated that Israel could now focus its efforts on Hamas militants in Gaza and their main security concern, Iran. He also warned that Israel would strike Hezbollah hard if they violate the expected deal. The ceasefire aims to end nearly 14 months of fighting linked to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. The deal calls for a two-month halt in fighting and requires Hezbollah to end its armed presence in southern Lebanon, with Israeli troops returning to their side of the border. Thousands of additional Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers would deploy to the south, with an international panel monitoring compliance. Israeli forces continued strikes in Beirut and southern Lebanon before the ceasefire took effect, causing casualties. Hezbollah kept up rocket fire into northern Israel, further escalating tensions. The ceasefire deal aims to reduce the likelihood of war between Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran, but implementation and compliance remain major concerns.
