Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch is focused on bringing investment back to neglected areas of the city to drive its restoration. With plans for 1,800 new housing units over the next five years, including mixed-use developments like The Franklin, Deuitch is prioritizing amenities, accessibility, and services for both new and existing residents.
Deuitch is also working to address long-standing issues like food deserts by including a grocery store in a planned development and emphasizing the importance of filling gaps in available services. She aims to transform the former Elston High School into a hub for skills training, child care, and support services.
As one of nine Black mayors currently serving in Indiana, Deuitch is focused on ensuring that historically neglected neighborhoods receive the necessary investment and attention. She believes that electing people of color to positions of power is key to recognizing and reversing these trends.
With groundbreaking for a major development scheduled for June and plans to explore redevelopment options for upcoming closures of the Indiana State Prison and NIPSCO coal-fired power plant, Deuitch is committed to driving positive change in Michigan City. By prioritizing inclusivity and addressing community needs, she aims to create a more vibrant and equitable city for all residents.
