European MEPs have approved the new team of European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen for her second term. The team includes key commissioners responsible for culture, technology, and the Creative Europe Media programme. Finland’s Henna Virkkunen will serve as the executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, overseeing areas such as AI, copyright, media regulation, and support for the audiovisual sector. Malta’s Glenn Micallef has been appointed as the commissioner for intergenerational fairness, youth, culture, and sport, with a focus on improving the conditions of artists and cultural professionals. The team of 26 commissioners, along with von der Leyen, was confirmed by 370 members of the European Parliament for a five-year term, starting on December 1.
The selection process for the commissioner team began after the European election in June, with each candidate undergoing a suitability assessment by the European Parliament. The approval of this new team marks the beginning of a new era for the European Commission, with a focus on areas such as technology, culture, and support for the creative industries. Von der Leyen’s team is set to tackle important issues such as AI strategy for the cultural and creative sectors, improving working conditions for artists, and enhancing youth engagement in culture and sports. The new commissioners are expected to work together to drive forward a vision for a more prosperous and inclusive European Union over the coming years.
