Gary man taken into custody following altercation with Indiana State Police K-9 and trooper


Gary, Ind. – Indiana State Police troopers arrested 33-year-old Gary resident Shelley O. Cooper after he fought with a K-9 and a trooper during a traffic stop on Monday. The incident occurred when a trooper pulled over a gray 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a minor traffic offense in Gary. The driver was found to have a suspended license and the trooper detected the smell of marijuana and alcohol in the vehicle. The driver, identified as Shelley O. Cooper, refused to cooperate during a field sobriety test and a struggle ensued between him and the trooper.

Cooper attempted to pull a handgun from his pants during the struggle but dropped it while trying to run from the trooper. A K-9 officer was used to subdue Cooper, who also intentionally laid on top of the K-9 in an attempt to injure it. Despite the altercation, the K-9 was unharmed.

Cooper sustained minor facial injuries from the incident and was taken to the hospital before being transported to the Lake County Jail. He faces charges including resisting law enforcement, unlawful possession of a firearm, and cruelty to a law enforcement animal, among others. Investigations revealed Cooper was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The case is currently under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
