A rarely seen painting by Italian master Caravaggio, featuring the future Pope Urban VIII, is set to go on display to the public for the first time in an exhibition in Rome. The painting, titled “The Portrait of Maffeo Barberini,” has been authenticated by art critic Roberto Longhi and was part of the Barberini family collection before entering private hands in the 1930s. The exhibition, titled “Caravaggio – The Portrait Unveiled,” will be held at the Barberini Palace from November 23 to February 23, showcasing this unique and valuable portrait. Gallery director Thomas Clement Salomon highlights the significance of this exhibition, as Caravaggio’s portraits are rare and highly sought after. Art historian Paola Nicita explains the painting’s focus on light and shadow, with a special emphasis on the gesture of the hands in the artwork. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity for the public and experts to view this exceptional piece that has never been lent to an exhibition before. The painting’s expressive nature and Caravaggio’s signature style make it a must-see for art enthusiasts and admirers of the Italian master.
