New York woman inches closer to uncovering the 44-year-old mystery surrounding her grandparents’ disappearance

The granddaughter of a New York couple who went missing 44 years ago, Christine Heller Seaman, expressed the emotional toll the disappearance took on her family over the years. Charles and Catherine Romer vanished in April 1980 while traveling home from Miami Beach, Florida in their 1978 Lincoln Continental. They checked into a hotel in Brunswick, Georgia, but were reported missing when hotel employees noticed their bed had not been slept in. Concerns of foul play surrounded their disappearance, as Catherine was wearing valuable jewelry at the time.

Decades later, a bone was found in a submerged car that matches the description of the Romers’ Lincoln Continental. Personal belongings, including jewelry and a license plate bearing the couple’s initials, were also discovered in the car. However, the human remains have not been identified as belonging to the Romers, and the car has not been confirmed to be theirs.

Seaman expressed relief at the possibility of closure and resolution in her family’s long-standing mystery. She recounted happy memories of her missing relatives, describing Catherine as the life of the party and Charles as a lovely and generous man. She thanked investigators and a diving team from Florida for their efforts in finding the submerged car and potentially providing answers. Although positive identifications are not expected for months, Seaman and her family found solace in coming together over Thanksgiving and celebrating the lives of the Romers without the lingering dread and sorrow of uncertainty.
