Iranian-Backed Cyberattack Targets Kash Patel, Trump’s Nominee for FBI Director

The FBI informed Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, that he was targeted in an Iranian cyberattack before his nomination. It is unclear when the attack occurred, but the hackers are believed to have accessed some of Patel’s communications. The FBI is currently investigating the incident. Patel would need current FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign or be fired for him to take over the position.

Trump’s transition spokesman stated that Patel played a role in the administration’s efforts against Iran and will implement the President’s policies as FBI Director. In a separate incident, three Iranian operatives were charged with hacking Trump’s campaign in an attempt to undermine the U.S. election. They were accused of stealing emails and documents and sharing them with media outlets.

Additionally, Iranian hackers had sent information stolen from the Trump campaign to individuals affiliated with President Joe Biden’s campaign, but there was no evidence of any response. The FBI and other agencies confirmed these incidents at the time. The ongoing cyberattacks highlight the ongoing cybersecurity threats faced by political campaigns and government officials.
