A new initiative in Indianapolis is taking on health and socio-economic disparities in five historic neighborhoods near IU Health’s new downtown hospital. The nonprofit Indy Health District Inc., in partnership with IU Health and local organizations, is working to transform these areas into healthier, more equitable communities. The selected neighborhoods include Meridian Highland, Highland Vicinity, Crown Hill, Ransom Place, and the historic Flanner House Homes, covering a 1,500-acre footprint.
The initiative aims to address a wide range of issues, including housing, education, childcare, workforce development, green spaces, and food access. Data shows residents in the district have a significantly lower life expectancy than those just eight miles away in a neighboring county. To combat these disparities, the district is collaborating with various organizations and institutions, with a focus on long-term, sustainable change.
While the challenges are significant, the district’s executive director, Jamal Smith, emphasizes the importance of transparency and collaboration. He stresses that this initiative is a long-term investment in the existing community, rather than a quick fix. By working together, the goal is to bridge the gap and build healthier, more resilient communities. For more information, visit indyhealthdistrict.org.
