Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, announced she will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee to focus on potential Senate vacancy after Marco Rubio’s nomination as secretary of state. Trump helped achieve fundraising records, election integrity goals, and voter turnout efforts at the RNC. She has not rejected the possibility of filling the Senate seat if tapped. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will choose Rubio’s replacement and is reportedly also being considered for defense secretary. President-elect Trump has directly spoken to DeSantis about the issue. Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth’s nomination for defense secretary is in jeopardy amid allegations of mistreatment of women and drinking. Hegseth has denied mistreating women and has vowed not to withdraw as the pick. Carly Roman, a politics editor at NBC News, contributed to the coverage alongside other journalists.
