Two men were rescued by the Indianapolis Fire Department after becoming stranded on an island in the White River while trying to recover stolen bikes. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning when IFD crews responded to a 911 call reporting someone calling for help on the water. The men, ages 21 and 43, were found unharmed but cold after being stuck on the island for about an hour and a half. The rescue operation faced challenges in locating an accessible boat ramp, with several unsuccessful attempts before using the Belmont access ramp. After a slow journey through icy waters, the men were finally rescued around 2:45 a.m. They were evaluated by medics and released. The Indianapolis Fire Department commended the swift and efficient response of their teams in rescuing the stranded men. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of water activities during the winter months and the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure safety.
