Former Safeway in Indiana to be transformed into new plumbing school by Indiana trade school – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

Beech Grove Trade School Plans Expansion to Former Safeway Site

A central Indiana trade school, Mechanical Skills Inc., is planning to expand to a new location on the site of a former Safeway and Marsh Supermarket in Beech Grove. The city recently demolished the building, leaving an empty parking lot that will soon be home to a new 20,000 square foot plumbing school.

The Indiana Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association runs a four-year apprenticeship program at the school, which currently operates out of a building on East Michigan Street in Indianapolis. The new location will provide more space for both in-class and hands-on teaching, accommodating around 900 students ranging from recent graduates to those seeking a career change.

Mayor James Coffman sees the plumbing school as a catalyst for revitalizing an area that has struggled since the closure of St. Francis Hospital in 2012. The school also aims to address the statewide shortage of licensed plumbers, with plans to train the next generation of plumbing professionals.

While a groundbreaking date is still uncertain, Mayor Coffman expects the city council to approve rezoning for the school in their upcoming meeting. The expansion represents a positive step for both the trade school and the local community in Beech Grove.
