American Eagle flight, carrying figure skaters returning from training camp, crashes

Elite American figure skaters, as well as Russian world champions, were onboard an American Eagle flight that collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River. The skaters were returning from a training camp in Wichita, Kansas, held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The athletes were participating in the National Development Camp, which serves as a launchpad for those vying for a spot on Team USA in upcoming world championships. Among the passengers were Russian figure skating champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who had been living in the U.S. since 1998 and were working as coaches for skaters including the Russian national team. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian nationals were onboard the flight but did not specify if Shishkova and Naumov were among the victims. The U.S. Figure Skating community expressed devastation over the tragic event and offered condolences to the victims’ families. The cause of the midair collision is still under investigation, and this story is developing.
