Hundreds from the LGBTQ+ community come together at Indiana Statehouse

LGBTQ+ Statehouse Day took place at the Indiana Statehouse, where members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and lawmakers gathered. Organizers highlighted proposed legislation targeting the rights of transgender Hoosiers, including restrictions on changing birth certificates and driver’s licenses to reflect gender identity. Cheers of “We won’t go back!” filled the air as attendees protested such legislative proposals.

Emma Vosicky, the executive director of GenderNexus, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for gender-diverse individuals. Krisztina and Ken Inskeep, who run a support group for transgender children and parents, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for solidarity and understanding.

The Inskeeps, whose transgender son lives out of state, spoke out against Senate Enrolled Act 480, a law prohibiting hormone therapy and puberty blockers for transgender kids in Indiana. State Rep. Chris Campbell introduced House Bill 1444 to amend this law, aiming to remove restrictions that prevent parents from discussing their children’s out-of-state treatment with doctors.

The rally called for action, urging attendees to raise their voices and demand that HB 1444 be heard in the House Public Health Committee. The overarching message emphasized the importance of supporting and respecting the rights of transgender individuals in Indiana.
