Banks Warns of Impact on IMPD’s Federal Grants

U.S. Sen. Jim Banks is considering pulling federal grants for law enforcement agencies that refuse to participate in federal immigration sweeps, including the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Banks expressed his disappointment with IMPD Chief Chris Bailey’s statement that his department would not take part in immigration enforcement. Banks is a strong supporter of the immigration sweeps that began under President Trump and has commended Gov. Mike Braun for ordering statewide law enforcement agencies to assist federal immigration officials.

Banks believes there should be no exceptions for undocumented immigrants, even those who are married to legal immigrants or U.S. citizens. He argues that hiring undocumented workers not only exploits them but also disadvantages American workers. Immigrant-rights groups estimate that a significant portion of farm workers, building maintenance personnel, and construction workers in the U.S. are undocumented immigrants. Banks emphasized the importance of employing legal immigrants or U.S. citizens for the long-term stability of the country.

IMPD did not provide a comment on Banks’ threat, but the senator remains firm in his stance that federal grants should be contingent on cooperation with federal immigration efforts. Banks’ views will be further discussed on the “All INdiana Politics” program on WISH-TV at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
