Can Indiana’s success in reading be replicated in math?


State leaders in Indiana are considering new interventions to improve math education after less than 41% of elementary and middle school students passed the math portion of the 2024 ILEARN exam. A proposed House Bill, HB 1634, aims to provide swift interventions for students struggling with foundational math skills. The bill, authored by Rep. Jake Teshka, would require schools to offer structured math support tailored to individual student needs.

The bill has received support from Democrat Representative Tonya Pfaff, a math teacher, who believes that focusing on improving math skills is essential. The goal is to close the achievement gap and improve math proficiency among Indiana students.
