Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer recently made history by conducting the first space mobile video call from a remote area in Wales to Vodafone Group Chief Executive, Margherita Della Valle, using advanced satellite technology. This groundbreaking achievement sets the stage for Vodafone to launch the first commercial direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service in Europe by 2025.
The new satellite technology, developed in partnership with AST SpaceMobile, allows users in areas with no mobile coverage to make voice and video calls, access the Internet, and use online messaging services using their regular 4G or 5G smartphones. Unlike traditional satellite services, users do not need special equipment, as the service seamlessly integrates with Vodafone’s existing terrestrial networks.
Astronaut Tim Peake, who joined the unveiling of the space-to-land gateway in Europe, praised the significance of the achievement in closing mobile coverage gaps and improving digital connectivity for all. Vodafone’s partnership with AST SpaceMobile aims to provide reliable digital connectivity in rural areas and enhance overall resilience in communications infrastructure.
