An 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s will be deposed after a judge ruled him competent to face questions about the allegations. Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr. was able to differentiate truth from lies during questioning at the federal courthouse in Indianapolis, leading the judge to allow the deposition to proceed despite objections from Bomba’s guardian that he was not competent to testify.
Former basketball players Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller sued Indiana University, alleging that coaches and trainers were aware of Bomba subjecting players to unnecessary prostate exams. The lawsuit claimed there could be “at least one hundred” victims and accused the university of Title IX violations for allegedly failing to protect students.
While legendary coach Bob Knight and Bomba were not named as defendants in the lawsuit, the university is represented by the law firm Barnes & Thornburg. Bomba served as the basketball team’s doctor from 1979 until the late 1990s. The lawsuit alleges that players were subjected to invasive rectal exams by Bomba, whose actions were reportedly openly discussed among team members and staff.
Mujezinovic and Miller are seeking unspecified damages and are encouraging other former teammates to join their lawsuit. The case echoes a scandal at Ohio State University where former wrestlers alleged that coaches were aware of a team doctor’s abuses but did not intervene.
