Ontario to no longer carry U.S. alcohol on shelves following Trump’s tariffs announcement


Ontario has decided to pull all American alcohol from its government-run liquor shelves and catalog starting Tuesday in response to President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.The Liquor Control Board of Ontario, one of the largest wholesalers of alcohol in the province, will no longer sell American wine, beer, spirits, and seltzers, totaling nearly $1 billion in sales annually. This decision was announced by Premier Doug Ford following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s imposition of retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion of U.S. goods.The LCBO will cease all sales of U.S. alcohol products both online and in stores indefinitely, as they are the importer of record for American alcohol in Ontario. The move follows similar actions by other Canadian provinces, with Nova Scotia and British Columbia also removing American alcohol from their liquor shelves in retaliation to the tariffs.Canada primarily imports hard liquor from America, with an estimated $320 million in sales. The U.S. ranks Canada as its second main export destination for liquor, with a trade value of $25.9 million. Premier Ford encouraged consumers to choose Ontario-made or Canadian-made products instead of American alcohol in light of the current trade dispute.
