Sen. Banks warns IMPD of potential loss of federal grants due to chief’s immigration remarks

Senator Jim Banks is considering pulling federal grants for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that refuse to participate in federal immigration sweeps. Banks is unhappy with IMPD Chief Chris Bailey’s statement that his department will not assist in immigration sweeps as local law enforcement does not have the authority to enforce federal immigration laws. Banks supports the immigration sweeps conducted by ICE and commends Indiana Governor Mike Braun’s order for statewide law enforcement agencies to assist federal immigration officials. He believes there should be no exceptions for undocumented immigrants, regardless of their relationship to legal immigrants or U.S. citizens. Banks argues that employing undocumented workers takes advantage of both them and American workers, and believes that employers should only hire legal immigrants or U.S. citizens. He asserts that cracking down on undocumented workers will benefit American workers’ wages and the long-term stability of the country. Despite Banks’ threat to pull federal grants, IMPD has not provided a comment on the matter. The senator’s views on immigration and workplace regulations will be discussed on “All INdiana Politics” airing on WISH-TV at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
